The Pinprick Project |
|
For some time we have been talking about the introverted nature of our parish and what we can do to share our good fortune with others far less fortunate than ourselves. But what could we do? As one small, though fairly wealthy, parish we couldn’t hope to make much of a difference to anyone and we embarked on the mission to find just one project—a pinprick in the world of poverty and misery—where we could make a difference, no matter how small. A short time ago, we were introduced to the Sisters of the Cross and the Passion who work with some of the poorest people in Botswana. These people live on the edge of the Kalahari desert, in mud huts which cannot withstand the extremes of weather; they often die young of AIDS and other diseases and often don’t know how they can get enough food to even feed their children. As a parish, we have decided to adopt this project and will be sending regular funds to help provide better housing, food and healthcare for the villagers. The sisters ensure that our money is spent on those people most in need and who work with them to improve their lives. Our fund raising during Lent was collecting 20p (which buys one brick with which to build a house!) in Smartie Tubes. We understand that there is now a national shortage……….! Pictures from the project will be posted to this page on a regular basis.
To date we have been able to send almost £10,000 which means that 3 families have new homes! Thank you so much to everyone who has fund-raised, fun-runned, swam across Morecombe Bay (almost) and approached all possible donors in Lancashire….. Keep it up! |
